Oxide
A compound formed when the element oxygen reacts with another element.
Combustion reaction
The reaction of a metal with oxygen in the presence of heat.
Copper oxide
A black compound formed when reddish coloured metal copper reacts with oxygen in the air.
Iron oxide
A substance formed when iron (steel wool) burns in air.
Non-metal oxide
A substance produced when non-metals burn in air and react with oxygen.
Oxygen content in air
The percentage of oxygen found in air, which is 21%, making reactions take longer than in pure oxygen.
Laboratory preparation of oxygen
A process involving the heating of a mixture of potassium chlorate and manganese dioxide.
Downward displacement of water
The movement method used to collect oxygen gas in a laboratory setting.
Carbon combustion
Carbon (charcoal) burns in oxygen with a yellow flame to form the colourless gas carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide chemical equation
C(s)+O2(g)→CO2(g)
Acidic oxide indicator test
Tests showing that an oxide is acidic, such as turning blue litmus red or turning bromothymol blue yellow.
