Tissues are:
sets of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function
where can epithelial tissue be found on the body?
Covers all free body surfaces, lines and covers organs. Additionally:
outer surface of the skin
lining of GI tract
respiratory tract
lining of blood vessels
tissue term for one layer of cells only
simple epithelial tissue
tissue term for several layers of cells
stratified epithelial tissue (strat means layer in latin)
What type of tissue provides protection?
Stratified epethelium. It’s good at this because of its layers (as you can tell from word stratified)
epithelial tissue is anchored in place by a
basement membrane
Which type of epithelial tissue allows for diffusion and filtration and is found in the alveoli of lungs, blood vessels, and capillaries?
Simple squamous epithelium.
Simple squamous epithelium is ideal for diffusion and filtration because its structure is a single layer of extremely thin, flat cells. This minimizes the physical distance molecules must travel, providing a highly permeable barrier that allows gases, fluids, and nutrients to pass through rapidly
Which type of epithelial tissue functions in secretion and absorption and is found in glands and kidney tubules?
Simple cuboidal.
One layer with the space in between is good for the glands.
Which epithelial tissue provides protection and is found in the epidermis and mucous membranes?
Stratified squamous.
Stratified squamous epithelium is excellent for protection because its multiple, overlapping layers act as a physical shield against mechanical abrasion, chemical damage, and pathogen invasion.
Which type of tissue lines the digestive tract and functions in absorption?
Simple columnar epithelium.
Simple columnar epithelium is highly efficient at absorption because its tall, single-layer structure provides room for many organelles
Which epithelial tissue appears multi-layered but all cells touch basement and is found in the respiratory tract, nasal cavity, pharynx, and trachea?
Psuedostratified columnar.
Which epithelial tissue expands and stretches and is found in the urinary bladder?
Transitional
Which epithelial tissue is found in sweat glands, ducts, and ovarian follicular cells?
Stratified cuboidal.
Which epithelial tissue is found in mammary gland ducts and the larynx?
Stratified columnar.
What 3 things do cell junctions do?
Permeability barrier
Intercellular communication
Bind cells together
Which cell junction holds cells tightly together, provides mechanical strength and stability; skin, heart, muscles.
Desmosomes
