What are the functions of water?
- regulates the body’s temperature through sweating
- transports O2, CO2 & nutrients around the body
- removes waste products from the body through urine & faeces
- helps the kidneys flush out harmful substances from the blood
- needed in cells & tissues in the body
- prevents skin from drying out
- keeps the lining of the lungs, digestive system & mucus membranes moist
What is dehydration?
when the body is losing more water than is being replaced by drinking
What are the effects of dehydration?
- headaches
- feeling dizzy & lightheaded
- excreting urine less which is also more dark-coloured & strong smelling
- increased heartbeat & changes in blood pressure
- death in extreme cases because the blood gets thicker & therefore harder to pump around the body, causing the heart to stop
What is water intoxication?
when someone has drunk too much water
What are the effects of water intoxication?
- headaches
- nausea & vomiting
- death in extreme cases
What is the recommended intake of water?
6 - 8 glasses a day
(including drinks such as milk & fruit juice but not including water content from food)
