Ovid Metamorpheses - lines 86-99

Spectat et in vultu veluti tum denique viso lumina fixa tenet on his face

She looked at him and she held her eyes fixed

Nec se mortalia demens

As if she had not seen it until then

Ora videre putat nec se declinat ab illo

And out of her mind, she thought that she was looking at a face that was not mortal

Ut vero coepitque loqui dextramque prehendit hospes

And she did not turn away from him, indeed when the guest began to speak and he grasped her right hand

Et auxilium submissa voce rogavit

And he asked for help with a lowered voice

Promisitque torum, lacrimis ait illa profusis

And he promised marriage, she spoke, with tears pouring out

Quid faciam, video: nec me ignorantia veri decipiet, sed amor

I see what I am doing and ignorance of the truth will not deceive me, but love (will)

Servabere munere nostro

You will be saved by my gift

servatus promissa dato

After you have been saved, give me the things you have promised

Ille deae, lucoque foret quod numen in illo

He swore by the sacred rites of the three formed goddess and by whatever power was in that grove

Perque patrem soceri cernentem cuncta futuri

And by the father of his future father in law, all seeing

Eventusque suos et tanta pericula iurat

And by his successes and such great dangers

(Ille) creditus accepit cantatas protinus herbas

She believed him and he received the herbs which had immediately been enchanted

Edidicitque usum, laetusque in tecta recessit

And he thoroughly learnt their use, and he happily withdrew into his dwelling
