Reliability
Degree to which a measure of physical or cognitive abilities is free from random error.
Validity
Extent to which a performance measure assesses all the relevant aspects of job performance.
Criterion-related validity
Method of establishing validity by showing a substantial correlation between test scores and job-performance scores.
Concurrent validation
Measure all current job incumbents on an attribute and their performance to determine correlation.
Predictive validation
Measure all applicants on an attribute, hire them, and then assess their performance over time.
Correlation coefficient
Range between –1.0 and 1.0; measures the degree to which two sets of numbers are related.
Content validation
Demonstrating that test items are a representative sample of job-related problems or situations.
Generalizability
Degree to which the validity of a selection method established in one context extends to other contexts.
Utility
Degree to which information from selection methods enhances the effectiveness of selecting personnel.
Legality
All selection methods must conform to existing laws and legal precedents.
Situational interview
An interview based on hypothetical scenarios.
Behavioral interview
An interview based on past experiences.
Common interviewer biases
First impressions, relying on information from others, and stereotyping.
Physical ability tests
Assess physical capabilities relevant to job performance.
Cognitive ability tests
Differentiate individuals based on mental capacities like verbal comprehension and reasoning ability.
Personality inventories
Categorize individuals by personality characteristics based on models like the 'Big 5'.
Emotional intelligence
The ability to identify and manage one's own emotions and the emotions of others.
Honesty/Integrity tests
Assess an individual's truthfulness and ethical standards.
Drug testing
