What are pulmonary diseases?
Significant cause of morbidity & mortality > 500 million people globally have chronic pulmonary disease Symptoms of dyspnea & fatigue Results in: Exertional intolerance Reduced QoL Increased risk of hospitalization & mortality Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Improves exercise tolerance Reduces symptoms Improves QoL
What is an obstructive pulmonary disease?
Can’t get air out of the lungs Reduction in airflow
What is a restrictive pulmonary disease?
Can’t get enough air into the lungs Reductive in lung volume
What are lung function tests?
FEV1/FVC → total amount of air breathed out 80%
How does an obstructive disease affect FEV1/FVC?
Takes longer, lower FEV, FVC same
How does a restrictive disease affect FEV1/FVC?
FVC lower, FEV1 same
What is pulmonary rehabilitation?
PR is recommended for: COPD Cystic fibrosis Pulmonary hypertension Pulmonary fibrosis Adjuncts may be needed: Supplemental oxygen Bronchodilators Breathing techniques PLB IM
