Symbol
Anything which represents something else (can represent an abstract or concrete thing) by association, resemblance, or convention. The basic building block of figurative language.
Metaphor
A figure of speech that implies a comparison between two unrelated things by stating one is the other, thereby adding meaning and understanding. Not using “like” or “as”.
Personification
A figure of speech in which human attributes are given to animals, inanimate objects, or abstract concepts, allowing for vivid imagery and emotional connections.
Apothesis
The elevation of a person to divine status, often used in literature to describe a character achieving greatness. Appearing “godlike” or being compared to a godlike being.
Simile
A figure of speech that compares two different things using the words "like" or "as," enhancing description and imagery.
Analogy
A comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification, illustrating how they are similar in certain aspects while differing in others.
Allusion
An indirect reference to a person, place, event, or work of literature, often enhancing meaning through context.
Allegory
A fictional work in which an entire narrative, including characters, event, etc. represent ideas or concepts
