Jaundice
A yellowing of the skin or eyes indicating liver or gallbladder disease.
Abdominal Girth
A measurement taken during palpation to assess the abdomen.
Feeding Tube Nursing Care
Verify tube placement and elevate the HOB to 30 to 45 degrees while monitoring for tolerance and complications.
Anorexia
A lack of appetite.
Nausea
The urge to vomit.
Vomiting
The act of expelling stomach content through the esophagus and mouth.

Weight loss through a health-balanced diet, calorie restriction, and exercise.
Hiatal Hernia
A condition caused by smoking, obesity, pregnancy, or being an adult over 50, where GERD is often a secondary condition.
GERD Symptoms
Heartburn, Regurgitation, Hoarseness, and sore throat.
Barrett’s Esophagus
A serious complication of Gastroesophageal reflux disease [GERD].
Mallory-Weiss Tear
A condition caused by repetitive, forceful vomiting or retching, often associated with heavy alcohol use and cirrhosis.
Gastritis
Inflammation of the stomach characterized by reflex, pain, and nausea.
Peptic Ulcer Causes
H. pylori, NSAID overuse, alcohol, and smoking.
Duodenal Ulcer
A type of peptic ulcer characterized by mid-epigastric pain.
Peptic Ulcer Diagnostics
Biopsy urease test, Immunoglobin G antibody detection for H. pylori, Culture, Urea breath test, Upper GI series, and EGD.
Severe Gastric Bleeding
Symptoms include Hypovolemic shock, weak pulse, chills, and palpitation.
Bristol Stool Chart
A tool used to identify stool types to help understand bowel issues like constipation.
McBurney’s Point
A location in the RLQ associated with rebound tenderness in Appendicitis.
Appendicitis Warning Sign
If the patient suddenly feels better, it is a sign of possible perforation.
Diverticulitis
Inflammation or infection of an outpouching (diverticulosis) often presenting with pain in the LWQ.
Crohn’s Disease
An autoimmune bowel disease that can cause malnutrition, fissures, abscesses, and fistulas.
Ulcerative Colitis Complications
Hemorrhage, Toxic megacolon, Perforation, Peritonitis, Osteoporosis, and increased risk of colorectal cancer.
Celiac Disease
An absorption disorder caused by gluten intolerance requiring a high calorie, high protein, and gluten-free diet.
Melena
Dark tarry stools indicating lower gastrointestinal bleeding.
Hematochezia
Bright red blood per rectum.
Carcinoembryonic Antigen
A test used in the diagnosis of Colorectal Cancer.
Icteric Phase
The late phase of Hepatitis characterized by yellowing (jaundice) of the skin and eyes.
Lactulose
A medication used in the treatment and teaching for Acute Liver Failure.
Portal Hypertension
A complication of cirrhosis that can cause Ascites and Esophageal Varices.
Hepatic Encephalopathy
A condition associated with cirrhosis causing kidney problems and "wet brain syndrome" (confusion, vision, and muscle issues).
Turner Sign and Cullen Sign
Clinical complications or signs associated with Acute Pancreatitis.
Steatorrhea
Pale, floating stools associated with Chronic Pancreatitis.
