Bond enthalpy definition
energy needed to break 1 mol enthalpy of a specific bond in a molecule in gaseous state.
Must be a gas.
Bond breaking
ENDOTHERMIC
have to put energy in to break bonds so reactants are positive as you are trying to break bonds
Bond making
EXOTHERMIC
making bonds releases energy so products are negative.
Bond enthalpy equation
sum of reactant enthalpies - sum of product enthalpies
Why is it called “average” bond enthalpy?
As its an average due to the strength of bond being influenced by neighbouring bonds
