Cardiovascular system
A system whose primary function is to transport oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body.
Heart
The organ serving as the center of the cardiovascular system, containing four chambers.
Right atrium
The heart chamber that receives deoxygenated blood from the body.
Right ventricle
The heart chamber that pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
Left atrium
The heart chamber that receives oxygenated blood from the lungs.
Left ventricle
The heart chamber that pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
Aorta
The largest artery in the body.
Arteries
A type of blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.
Veins
A type of blood vessel that carries blood toward the heart (visiting).
Capillaries
Tiny blood vessels where oxygen, nutrients, and waste products are exchanged.
Red blood cells
Blood components that function to transport oxygen.
Hemoglobin
The protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen.
White blood cells
Blood cells that have the primary function of fighting infection and disease.
Platelets
Blood components that help with clotting.
Plasma
The liquid portion of blood.
Blood pressure
The force of blood pushing against artery walls.
Normal adult blood pressure
Approximately 120/80mmHg.
Pulmonary circulation
The circulation path that carries blood between the heart and lungs for oxygen exchange.
Pulmonary
A term referring to the lungs.
