Arterial Blood Pressure
Measure of the pressure exerted by the blood as it flows through the arteries.
systolic blood pressure
It is the maximal pressure exerted on the wall of the blood vessel during systole of
the heart. The normal range is 90 - 140 mmHg
diastolic pressure
It is the minimal pressure exerted on the wall of the blood vessel during the
diastole of the heart. The normal range is 60- 90 mmHg
pulse pressure
difference between systolic and diastolic pressure is normally about 50 mm Hg
Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP)
diastolic pressure + 1/3 pulse pressure. 70 to 100 mmHg
sphygmomanometers
instrument used to measure blood pressure

sphygmomanometers parts
an inflatable cuff, a pressure gauge (Aneroid manometer), an inflation bulb, and an air release valve

The Palpatory Method
feeling the radial pulse while the blood pressure cuff is deflating, used to determine systolic pressure

The Auscultatory Method
a method of measuring blood pressure by listening for the appearance and disappearance of Korotkoff sounds within the body

fisrt sound
systolic pressure
no sound
diastolic pressure
Korotkoff sounds
Sounds heard during blood pressure measurement.
What is the auscultatory Gap?
which is a period when koroktoff sounds disappear during auscultation
happens mainly in hypertension people caused by a non-compliant arterial system
