Lewis dot structures
A method used to visualize valence shell electrons in a chemical bond, introduced by Gilbert N. Lewis in 1916.
Gilbert N. Lewis
The scientist who introduced the concept of Lewis dot structures in 1916.
Valence shell electron
In Lewis structures, these are illustrated as a single dot around the element symbol.
Lone electron pairs
Shown as two dots around the element symbol in Lewis structures.
Line (in Lewis structures)
A notation sometimes used to indicate a shared or lone pair of electrons.
Ionic bond
A chemical bond formed via electron transfer, as seen in the formation of KCl from K and Cl.
Covalent bond
A chemical bond formed via the sharing of electrons, as seen in the formation of Cl2 from two Chlorine atoms.
KCl
The chemical formula for the ionic compound formed between Potassium (K) and Chlorine (Cl).
Cl2
The chemical formula representing a covalent bond between two Chlorine atoms.
