Requirements to be President
35 years old
Native-born American citizen
Have lived in the US for at least 14 years
Term of Office
President serves 4 year term. George Washington started a two term tradition. FDR broke that tradition during WWII and won election to office 4 times. 22nd Amendment (1951)- limits the president to two elected terms or 10 years total.

25th Amendment
Ratified in 1967
Vice President becomes President if something happens to President. New President chooses a new Vice president with help of Congress. Vice President can serve as Acting President. Vice President has a role in deciding if President is fit for duty.
Legislative Leader
The president can propose and support new laws that he wants Congress to pass. Make speeches (including State of the Union Address) Meet with members of Congress.
Commander in Chief
President has the power to order troops into battle. Commanders in each of the armed forces follow the orders of the president. War Power Resolution (1973)- President must let Congress know within 48hrs when troops are sent into battle.
Chief Executive
Oversees 15 departments & agencies. Appoints justices to the Supreme Court (Congress must approve). Powers to pardon, reprieve, and grant amnesty. Most important job is to carry out nations laws. Executive orders
Chief Diplomat
Leads foreign policy. Appoints ambassadors. Greets visiting foreign leaders. Negotiates treaties.
Head of state
Represents the American people. Presents medals, hosts holiday celebrations, invites winning super bowl team to the White house, mourn with families of New York on 9/11 anniversary.
Executive order
A directive by the president has the same power and force as a law. A part of the presidents duty is to “take care that the laws are faithfully executed” Enable the President to act quickly.
