Angiosperm
A group of plant bearing seeds which develop in an enclosed ovary.
Leucophollis irrorata
A species of beetle that is a serious pest of Acacia mangium.
Cotyledon
The first leaves of the embryo.
Habitat
The environment which supports an animal or plant population and includes space, food, cover and the presence of other animal or plant species.
Biological control
The use of natural enemies to control pest infestation.
Hydroponics
A method of rooting cuttings which involves oxygen cycling in water where cuttings are placed and addition of nutrients in the water.
Eutrophication
The enrichment of a water body with nutrients, resulting in excessive growth of phytoplankton, algae or vascular plants leading to depletion of oxygen.
Sheet erosion
The first stage of erosion during which layers of soil are imperceptibly washed away by surface flow.
RA 9072
The national caves and cave resources management and protection act.
RA 9147
The Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act.
Release cutting
A silvicultural treatment that aims to free a stand below the sapling stage from competing unwanted plant species that threaten to suppress them.
Ligule
A short membranous projection on the inner side of the leaf blade at the junction where the leaf blade and the leaf sheath meet.
Rhizobium
A nitrogen fixer involved in symbiotic association with legumes forming root nodules.
Ecosystem
An assemblage of organisms and the physical environment where exchanges of energy and matter exist.
Mulching
A nursery practice of covering the bed surface with a layer of organic materials to reduce evaporation of soil moisture and shield the soil surface from the sun.
Field capacity
The upper limit of the water holding capacity of the soil.
Pathology
A field of study that deals with disease infestation in forest community.
Ecotone
The boundary between two adjacent ecological communities or ecosystems.
Gymnosperm
A group of plants that produce seeds that do NOT develop in an enclosed ovary.
Xylem
Structure that has tiny pipelines that carry water with a small amount of dissolved minerals from the roots to the leaves of trees.
Tracheids
The major conducting elements in coniferous wood.
Buffer zone
A term used to refer to a boundary of a protected area.
Naval stores
The resin obtained from pine trees especially the Benguet pine.
Lichen
An organism comprising a species of fungus symbiotically joined with a species of algae.
Soil texture
The size of grain of soils.
Pruning
A silvicultural treatment which involves the removal of twigs and branches of the planted trees to enhance the growth and quality of final crops.
Vernalization
The induction of flowering by cold treatment.
Genetic isolation
The prevention of crossing among population due to chromosomal difference.
Sanitation cutting
A silvicultural treatment that aims to free the stand from diseased plant species.
Forest litter
A valuable source of humus.
Peatland
An ecosystem that accumulates plant material overtime and store an average of more carbon per hectare than any other ecosystem.
Hybrid
An organism which is the result of a cross between two varieties, species, or genera.
Colluvium
The soil that is moved by gravity.
Chemical weathering
The process of soil formation due to action of chemical substance.
Plant geography
A field of study that deals with the distribution of plants on the earth's surface.
Damping-off disease
A disease that results in the rapid decay of young succulent seedlings or by the sudden wilting of seedlings due to extensive necrosis of the stem near the soil line.
Cone
A seed or pollen-bearing structure in gymnosperms.
Germination
The process by which the embryo in a seed breaks the seed coat and begins to develop into a young plant.
Phytotoxic
A chemical which is toxic to plant.
Rachis
The common petiole on which the leaflets of a compound leaf are inserted.
Ips calligraphus
A species of beetle considered as the worst pest of pines in the Philippines.
Guttation
The loss of water in liquid from droplets along the margin of the leaves.
