POMV
Prescription Only Medicine - Veterinarian. Can only be prescribed by a vet but can be supplied by the vet or a pharmacy with a written prescription.
POM VPS
Prescription Only Medicine - Veterinarian, Pharmacist, or Suitably Qualified Person. Can be prescribed by a vet, pharmacist, or SQP and supplied by any of the three, but a prescription is only needed if the prescriber and supplier are different.
Suitably Qualified Person (SQP)
Someone who is registered under AMTRA (the regulatory body for veterinary medicines) and has completed a training course.
Withdrawal Period
The period during which a drug needs to be cleared from an animal's system to ensure the animal is safe for human consumption. Example: 28 days for meat from cows; 7 days for milk and eggs.
NFA VPS
Non-Food Animal, Veterinarian, Pharmacist, Suitably Qualified Person. Medicines for non-food animals (pets) that can be supplied by a vet, pharmacist, or SQP without a prescription; examples include flea and worming treatments.
AVM GSL
Authorized Veterinary Medicine - General Sales List. GSL medicines for animals that can be bought in supermarkets.
Exemption for Small Pet Animals
Veterinary medicines that do not require marketing authorization and apply to small pet animals such as fish, caged birds, ferrets, rabbits, and small rodents. Can only be supplied in a single course of treatment.
Unlicensed Medicines
Medicines that do not have marketing authorization and do not qualify for the exemption for small pet animals. Can only be prescribed by a vet under the veterinary cascade; this includes human medicines used for animals.
