Muscle fiber
A single muscle cell that contracts and produces force.

Fascicle
A bundle of muscle fibers grouped together.

Endomysium
A thin layer of connective tissue surrounding each muscle fiber.
Perimysium
Connective tissue that surrounds a fascicle (bundle of muscle fibers).
Epimysium
The outer layer of connective tissue that surrounds the entire muscle.
Tendon
A tough band of connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone.
Ligament
A band of connective tissue that connects bone to bone.
Sarcomere
The basic unit of muscle contraction within a muscle fiber.
Actin
A thin filament in muscle fibers that helps with contraction.
Myosin
A thick filament in muscle fibers that pulls on actin to cause contraction.
Cross bridge cycle
The process where myosin heads attach to actin, pull, release, and repeat to cause muscle contraction.
