Osteoblasts
Bone cells that are responsible for bone formation.
Osteoclasts
Bone cells that are responsible for bone resorption.
Osteocytes
Mature bone cells that maintain bone tissue.
Osteoprogenitor cells
Stem cells that differentiate into osteoblasts.
Howship's lacuna
Depressions in bone surface where osteoclasts resorb bone.
Compact bone
Dense bone that forms the outer layer of bones.
Spongy bone
Lightweight, porous bone found inside bones.
Medullary cavity
Space within the bone that contains bone marrow.
Periosteum
Outer fibrous layer surrounding the bone.
Haversian system (Osteon)
Structural unit of compact bone formed by concentric lamellae.
Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
Type of epithelium found in areas subject to friction, such as skin.
Parakeratinization
Process where the stratum corneum retains nuclei, indicating incomplete keratinization.
Non-keratinocytes
Cells in the epithelium that do not produce keratin.
Desmosome
Cell junction that Links adjoining cells to resist mechanical stress.
Basement membrane
Thin layer that anchors epithelium to underlying connective tissue.
Filiform papillae
Thread-like structures on the tongue providing texture and grip.
Taste bud
Sensory structures in the oral cavity responsible for the sense of taste.
Masticatory mucosa
Dense, keratinized mucosa found in areas subjected to mechanical forces.
Mixed salivary gland
Gland that contains both serous and mucous cells.
Eruption
Process by which teeth emerge through the gum line.
Odontoclast
Cell responsible for the resorption of tooth structure during shedding.
