What is the pathway of air?

Nose → pharynx → larynx → trachea → bronchi → bronchioles → alveoli

New cards

What are the 3 functions of the respiratory system?

  1. External respiration

  2. Internal respiration

  3. Cellular respiration

4
New cards

What is external respiration?

The movement of oxygen into the blood stream and carbon dioxide into the lungs.

5
New cards

What is internal respiration?

The release of oxygen to respiring cells for energy production and collection of waste products.

6
New cards

What is cellular respiration?

The metabolic reactions that take place on a cell to obtain energy from fuels such as glucose.

7
New cards

What do the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx and trachea do?

They all have a mucous membrane and ciliated cells to moisten, warm and filter the air before it enters the lungs.

8
New cards

What does the bronchi do?

It subdivides into smaller bronchioles and ned in alveolar ducts. This is the entrance for air to move into the alveoli.

9
New cards

What are alveoli and what do they do?

Clusters of tiny air sacs covered in a dense network of capillaries which together serve as the external site for gaseous exchange.
