First Aid
The help given to a person who is hurt or sick to keep them alive and stop their condition from getting worse.
Unconsciousness
A state where the brain is not working properly, potentially caused by lack of oxygen, injury, or disease of the brain.
Recovery Position
A stable and comfortable position used for an unconscious breathing person to prevent them from swallowing their tongue or drowning in vomit.
Artificial Respiration
Mouth-to-mouth or mouth-and-nose breathing provided to a casualty whose breathing has stopped.
Respiratory Arrest
A life-threatening condition where breathing stops; recovery chances drop significantly after 5 to 11 minutes.
Shock
A condition occurring when there is not enough blood to fill the circulatory system, preventing the brain from getting enough oxygen.
Pressure Bandage
A thick pad of cloth (compress) tied firmly over a wound to replace manual pressure and control bleeding.
Wound
A break in the skin that causes pain, blood loss, and a risk of infection.
Triangular Bandage
A First Aid tool with a base of at least 4 feet (12 metres) used to cover wounds, stop bleeding, or immobilize body parts.
Fracture
A broken or cracked bone that requires immobilization to prevent further movement and injury.
Sling
A support made from a triangular bandage used for suspected fractures of the collar-bone, upper arm, or shoulder blade.
Certificate of Fitness
A document issued by a Certifying Officer verifying that a motor vehicle conforms to prescribed conditions for road use.
Provisional License
A permit granted for a prescribed fee to enable an applicant to learn to drive with a view to passing a competence test.
Prescribed Alcohol Limit
The legal limit for drivers in Guyana, which is two beers or 35 microgrammes of alcohol.
Preventable Collision
A collision in which the driver fails to do everything reasonable to prevent the accident.
Defensive Driving
Driving to save lives, time, and money in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.
Hydroplaning
A condition where tires glide on a layer of water or oil, reducing the driver's ability to control the vehicle.
Thinking Distance
The distance a vehicle travels based on the driver's reaction time before the brakes are applied.
Braking Distance
The distance a vehicle travels after the brakes are applied until it comes to a complete standstill.
Danger Distance
The sum of Thinking Distance plus Braking Distance.
Interactive Communication Function
Mobile phone tasks including sending written messages, facsimile documents, moving images, or accessing the internet.
School Safety Patrols
Children identified by orange cross belts who have the authority to stop vehicular traffic to help other children cross roads safely.
Traffic Box
An intersection marking in which no vehicle should stop, designed to facilitate flow on intersecting roadways.
