doping
adding a small amount of another element into semiconductor (metaloid)
intramolecular forces
combo of attractive and repulsive electrical forces between pairs of electrons within a molecule
intermolecular force
forces between molecules and between molecules and ions that have a large impact on physical properties of all substances
factors affecting intermolecular force strength
motion of molecules, distance between molecules - greater distance=weaker
boiling point trend
greater molecular mass=greater energy needed to reach gas phase, increases as atomic number increases
dispersion/London forces
intermolecular force between nonpolar molecules caused by a temporary dipole in molecules. weakest IM force, dipole-dipole interaction
strength of dispersion forces
1- size of atoms/molecule- large=more polarizable, dispersion increases w polarizability
2- shape of molecule- more surface area=more interactions between molecules, linear have higher dispersion
