What is Anxiety?
A mechanism that enables individuals to avoid danger and harm.
What are psychological risk factors relating to anxiety?
Underlying cognitive schemas, conditioned response to early trauma or stress and cognitive distortion.
What is avoidance?
Avoiding anxiety provoking environment, thoughts or emotions. It plays a key role in maintaining and increasing anxiety. It prevents Anxiety from being adjusted.
What are some common social stressors?
Finances, accomodation, supports, cultrual expectations and beliefs.
What anxiety disorders?
GAD, SAD, panic disorder, specific phobia, agoraphobia
What is a panic attack?
Acute anxiety associated with a psychological response in any anxiety disorder. a sympathetic response that leads to hyperventilation, hypocapnia and respiratory alkalosis
What is a generalised anxiety disorder classified by?
Excessive anxiety or worry about events/ activitys occuring in more dys than not for atelast 6 months. difficulty controlling worry, and experiencing: restlessness, easily fatigued, difficulty concentrating, irritiabilty, muscle tension and sleep disturbance.
What is a social anxiety disorder?
Fear or anxiety about one or more social situations, in which the individual is exposed to scrutiny by others, fearing that they will act in a way that will be negatively evaluated.
What is a panic disorder?
Recurrent panic attacks, at least one attack being followed by persistent concern of having another attack.
What is a specific phobia?
A persistent fear that is excessive or unreasonable, when exposed to the stimulus, it provokes and immediate reaction. recognition that the fear is unreasonble.
What are the common subtypes of phobias?
Situational, natural environment, blood-injection-injury, animal
What is agoraphobia?
Fear about being in situations in open spaces, public settings or crowded areas.
What is obsessive compulsion disorder?
Obessions are pervasive and intrusive thoughts, impulses or images.
Compulsions are repetitive behaviours or metnal acts that must be applied rigidly.
in OCD, they recognise that the obsession and or compulsions are excessive and unreasonable. The obsessions and or compulsions cause marked distress, are time consuming, and significantly interfere with day-to-day functioning.
What is PTSD
exposed to a traumatic event, the event is persistently relived, recollections or dreams, with feelings that the event is taking place again.
