Atomic Number (Z)
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, determining the element's identity.
Mass Number
The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom's nucleus.
Isotope
Atoms that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
Cation
A positively charged ion, formed when an atom loses one or more electrons.
Anion
A negatively charged ion, formed when an atom gains one or more electrons.
Electromagnetic Radiation
A form of energy that exhibits wave-like behavior as it travels through space; includes light.
Planck's Constant (h)
A fundamental constant in quantum mechanics, approximately equal to 6.626 x 10^-34 J·s.
Photoelectric Effect
The emission of electrons from a material when it absorbs light; demonstrates light's particle-like properties.
Photon
A discrete packet of electromagnetic energy; exhibits both wave and particle properties.
Quantization of Energy
The concept that energy levels in an atom are restricted to specific discrete values.
