endocrine gland at the base of the brain that secretes growth hormone.

Growth hormone

hormone from the pituitary that stimulates growth; excess causes acromegaly.

Pituitary tumor

benign tumor of the pituitary gland causing excess growth hormone.

Laparoscopy

minimally invasive surgery using a laparoscope to examine the abdominal cavity; CO2 gas is used to separate abdominal structures.

lighted telescopic instrument used during laparoscopy.

space within the abdomen containing the peritoneum.

Tubal ligation

sterilization procedure in which fallopian tubes are clipped to prevent sperm from reaching eggs.

Fallopian tubes

tubes connecting ovaries to the uterus; site of tubal ligation.

Tracheotomy

surgical incision into the trachea to open the airway or remove a blockage.

Tracheostomy

opening into the trachea with an indwelling tube to allow air flow or remove secretions.

Adenoids

small masses of lymphatic tissue in the pharynx near the nose; not glands; enlargement may block the airway; adenoidectomy may be advised.
