Lina Rogers
The first school nurse, hired on October 1, 1902, in New York City to reduce student absenteeism by intervening with families regarding communicable diseases.
Act of 1920 (Lebanon)
A mandate issued under the French mandate requiring health inspections by hygiene department doctors, physical examinations, and completion of student health and vaccination records.
National School Health Program (1998)
A program launched in Lebanon that integrated health and environmental messages within curricular and extracurricular activities at the pre-university level.
School Nurse (NASN/ANA Definition)
A professional who provides clinical expertise, performs health screenings, and serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and healthcare providers to advocate for a healthy environment.
Primary Prevention in Schools
Specific interventions aimed at preventing injuries, disease education, and enforcing required vaccinations for schoolchildren.
Secondary Prevention in Schools
Activities involving emergency plans, medication administration, health screenings, and the identification of child abuse, neglect, or suicide risks.
Tertiary Prevention in Schools

Health Promoting School
A school that fosters health and learning by engaging teachers, students, parents, and community leaders to provide a healthy environment and nutrition safety programs.
School Health Index (SHI)
A self-assessment tool used by school health teams that includes eight modules corresponding to the Coordinated School Health Program model.
TLADD
A refusal skills framework used in health education which stands for Talk, Listen, Ask, Decide, Do.
Physical Education (Activity Standard)
A program requirement to provide a minimum of 60minutes of moderate to vigorous health-related activity per week.
School Health Services
A component of school health that includes preventative services, case finding, emergency care, and the management of acute and chronic conditions.
Screening Tests
Simple tests such as weight and height, visual acuity, hearing acuity, and dental examinations used to identify pathological conditions or suspected diseases.
School Health Record
A document for each school child containing personal data, results of health appraisals, immunization dates, and morbidity management records.
Counselor to Student Ratio
The minimum standard of 1:250 for school counselors to students.
Psychologist to Student Ratio
The minimum standard of 1:1000 for school psychologists to students.
Classroom Floor Area Standard
The requirement of 1−1.5m2 of floor area for primary students and 1.5−2m2 for intermediate and high school students in a 48m2 room.
School Furniture Standards
The specific requirement for desks to have a height and slope at a 15degree angle with a 60cm distance between columns.
