Numeral
A word from the semantic class of quantifiers that expresses number; combines words or word groups with varied morphosyntactic traits and is organized into categories by how it introduces the number in discourse.
Cardinal numeral
Denotes quantity and can be simple or compound; subdivides into several subtypes: propriu-zis, colectiv, multiplicativ, distributiv, adverbial, and fracționar.
Morfosintactic value: adjectival
When a numeral accompanies a noun as a determiner, it agrees in gender, number, and case; it functions as an adjectival attribute.
Morfosintactic value: pronominal
When a numeral substitutes for a noun; can occupy various syntactic positions; considered by linguists to behave more like a pronoun than a noun.
Morfosintactic value: substantival
Two contexts: (a) mathematical texts (e.g., Doi și cu doi fac patru); (b) [substantiv numerotabil + numeral], where the numeral acts as a denumire numerică (appositional attribute).
Morfosintactic value: adverbial
When a numeral modifies a verb (e.g., I-am spus de două ori), or serves as an adverbial (e.g., câte doi, dublu); multiplicative numerals can be adverbs and are treated as such in some grammars.
Genitive and dative with numerals
Genitive is shown with a + numeral (votul a doi senatori); dative with la (a dat note la doi elevi).
