what is field
An area where some objects experience a non-contact force. eg gravitational magnetic electrostatic fields.
what is mass
The amount of ‘stuff’ something is made of, measured in grams or kilograms
what is weight
A force measured in newtons (N)
what is the calculation for gravitational field strength
=weight/mass
what is the Gravitational field strength on Earth
The value which is about 10N/kg
what is a Newtonmeter
something used to measure forces.
what are Newtons (N)
The unit of measurement for forces.
what are contact forces
Forces that come when objects are touching, eg friction, drag forces, and support forces.
what are Non-contact forces
Forces that are at a distance, eg gravity, magnetic force, and electrostatic force.
what are Interaction pairs
The pairs where forces always come
Friction
A contact force that happens when two objects move against each other because the roughness of surfaces.
what is Lubrication
substances like oil or grease used to reduce friction.
what is a Drag force
A force made when a solid moving through a liquid or a gas pushes particles out of the way eg water resistance and air resistance.
what is Streamlined
part of an object's shape that reduces the drag forces acting on it.
what are Balanced forces
Forces acting on an object that are the same size but act in opposite directions, canceling each other out.
what is the Equilibrium
The state of an object when the balanced forces acting on it cancel out.
what are Unbalanced forces
Forces that are not the same size and do not cancel each other out, making a change in speed.
what is Upthrust
a support force that helps balance an object.
what is Extension
The amount that an object stretches when pulled.
what is Tension
A force that makes an object return to its original length after being stretched.
what is Hooke’s law
The law saying that the extension of a spring doubles when you double the force
