When do you use the imparfait indicatif?

• Past habits: Je jouais tous les jours.

• Ongoing past actions: Je lisais.

• Descriptions and background: Il faisait froid.

• Age, time and feelings in the past: J'avais dix ans.

How do you form the imparfait?

• Take the nous form of the present

• Remove -ons

• Add the imparfait endings

  • Example: nous parlons → parl- → je parlais.

  • Exception: être uses the stem ét-.

What are all the imparfait endings?

• je: -ais

• tu: -ais

• il/elle/on: -ait

• nous: -ions

• vous: -iez

• ils/elles: -aient

Which verbs have irregular stems in the imparfait?

• être: ét- → j'étais, nous étions

Almost all other verbs use the present nous stem, including avoir → j'avais, faire → je faisais, aller → j'allais, prendre → je prenais, venir → je venais.
