What is the purpose of the nurse care plan in the care of the elderly?
document the patients needs and wants, as well as the nursing interventions (or implications) plan to meet these needs
How does the NAI assist in the nursing process and the care plan?
Report any changes in patient condition or new observations related to new interventions
What are five components of the nursing process?
assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation
List the five needs with examples in Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
Physiological: nutrition (water and food), elimination (bathroom), vital signs, sleep, sex, shelter, and exercise
Safety and security: call lights, hand hygiene, fall precautions, assistive devices, building trust, ensure a clean, safe environment
Love and belonging: being supportive and keeping them free from social isolation, good communication skills, creating meaningful relationship
Self esteem: accepting ones physical appearence and their mental state
Self actualization: help them grow spiritually, encourage resident to reach maximum potential
What is considered an incident and who fills out an incident report?
Any time a patient makes a complaint, a medication error occurs, a medical device malfunctions, or anyone is injured or involved in a situation with the potential for injury

What type of injuries are commonly associated with the elderly in healthcare facilities?
falls or fractures of the hip, forearm, humerus, and pelvis
What do we document in an incident report?
any event that may or may not have caused injury to a person or damage to a company asset. Used to capture injuries and accidents, near misses, property and equipment damage, health and safety issues, security breaches and misconducts in the worksite
How and when does an NAI use critical thinking in the care of the residents?
When they use objective analysis to evaluate a situation and form a decision based on that information
it will help you anticipate and understand changes in your patients condition
What is considered a family?
Group of people related by blood, marriage, or a feeling of closeness
How does an NAI take care of the resident during family visit and how should they interact with the family?
By keeping an open line of communication and always being respectful
Examples: address them by their name, allow them time to help with tasks such as feeding and hair care
What should the NAI do in taking care of the emotional needs of the patient with dimmentia?
Listening carefully and being understanding to their condition. Maintain good communication by being calm ans supportive
What is person centered care of the emotional needs of those with dimentia?
Treating the person with dignity and respect, understanding their history, lifestyle, culture, and preferences, including their likes, dislikes, hobbies, and interests. Looking at situations from the point of view of the person with dimmentia
What is cognition?
the manner in which messaged from the 5 senses are changed, stored in memory, recovered from memory, and later used to answer questions, respond to requests, and perform tasks.
How does a resident's cognitive function affect how they respond to situations / care?
Can negatively affect an older residents ability to learn something new, perform tasks, or maintain motivation to complete an activity. Tend to move more cautious and less willing to respond quickly in situations where they think they might fail.
How can the NAI prevent burns when assisting the resident with bathing?
Checking the water temperature and allowing them to do so also.
(should be moderate water temperature)
How does a NAI prioritize resident care?
By giving the patient person centered care
How does age impact learning?
As age increases, working memory declines.
This affects learning because it can make tasks, such as, problem solving, and decision making more difficult
How does an NAI care for the toenails of a diabetic patient?
Do not cut them
What is the indwelling catheter and what is the best position for it when a resident is non ambulatory?
Catheter that is healed in place
it is insterted the same way as an intermittent catheter, but it is left in place
What is pacing and what type of resident can a nurse aide use this strategy for?
The awareness and adjustment of nursing care based on how slow or how fast a person is functioning
