7 artists that painted Canada’s northland. Famous for their impressionistic style.
Leslie McFarlane
Wrote 21 books of the Hardy Boy series as Franklin W. Dixon. Very popular in Canada & USA, influenced future writers.
Bluenose
A racing schooner made in Nova Scotia in 1921. Won the International Fisherman trophy & more throughout the 1920s. On the back of the dime.
Howie Morenz
Played hockey for Montreal. Best player of the 1920s, won 5 Hart trophies, and won 4 Stanley cups.
Lionel Conacher
Known as the “big train”, Won the Canadian light boxing championships and Ontario wrestling championship. Played football, hockey and lacrosse.
Voted best male athlete in the first half of the 20th century, 4th Canadian male athlete of the century.
Percy Williams
Won gold in the 100m dash and in the 200m event at the 1928 Olympics.
Frederick Banting
Made insulin to control diabetes. Sold the formula for $1 to U of T, won the noble prize for medicine.
Ted Rogers
Invented electric current to power the radio instead of batteries.
Foster Hewitt
Hosted CBC’s Hockey Night radio show - thrilled Canadians with commentary.
Mary Pickford
Called “American Sweetheart”. Made “United Artists” with Charlie Chaplin. Known for her acting - especially in silent movies.
Robert Borden
Prime Minister from 1911-1920, last to be knighted. Resigned as leader of Conservatives in 1920.
Arthur Meighen
Replaced Borden as leader of Conservatives and automatically became PM after he signed. Represented Conservatives at the 1921 and 1925 elections.
William Lyon Mackenzie King
New leader of the Liberals after Laurier died in 1919. Won the 1921 election and formed a coalition government in 1925 to become PM again.
Thomas A. Crerar
Leader of the Progressive Party - represented farmers. Lost the 1921 and formed a coalition government in 1925 (wasn’t PM).
R.B. Bennett
Leader of the Conservative Party, promised to help with the economic crisis and won the 1930 election. Couldn’t help with the Great Depression, stayed in office until 1935.
Emily Murphy
Gathered the Famous Five to request a hearing with the SCC. Got to British courts that ruled women are “persons”.
Emily Carr
Canadian artist, similar to the Group of Seven - similar artistic style and love for Canadian countryside.
John M. Keynes
British economist that suggested governments go into debt to inject money into the economy (stimulus spending).

Restraint from alcohol - temperance groups wanted to ban alcohol

Banning the sale of alcohol - put in place to reduce crime and violence.

Buying stock on credit with a 10% down payment & house as collateral.

Coalition Government
Two or more parties joining to win an election - combine seats.
Inflation
Periodic increase in the price of goods from economic issues.
