Arteries vs. Veins
Aorta & it’s parts
Brachiocephalic artery
Common carotid artery
Subclavian artery
Brachial artery
Arteries supply oxygenated blood to organs away from heart (except for the pulmonary arteries, which supply deoxygenated blood to lungs) & veins drain (deoxygenated blood except for pulmonary veins)
The aorta supplies the systemic circulation (body except lungs), parts include…
the ascending aorta- right and left coronary arteries branch from here (supply heart muscle; myocardium)
aortic arch- arching posteriorly and to the left and has 3 branches.
brachiocephalic trunk(right subclavian artery and right common carotid artery)
left common carotid artery
left subclavian artery)
thoracic aorta (descending)- chest
Abdominal aorta- inferior to diaphragm; abdomen and beyond
1st branch of arch (branches into right subclavian artery and right common carotid artery)- supplies right arm, right side of head+neck
2nd branch of arch (left)- supplies to head+neck
3rd branch of arch- supplies upper arm/shoulder (leads to left brachial artery of left arm & the right subclavian artery leads to right brachial artery of right arm)
Supplies upper arm
abdomen
Celiac Trunk (artery)
Renal artery
Superior mesenteric artery
Gonadal artery
Inferior mesenteric artery
1st major branch of abdominal aorta- supplies digestive (stomach, liver, spleen, pancreas, gall bladder)
Supplies kidneys
supplies small intestines (located above large)
Supplies ovaries + testes (gonads)
Supplies large intestines
Common iliac artery
external iliac artery
femoral artery
Pulmonary artery
Gastric artery
Hepatic artery
Terminal end of abdominal aorta- splits to each leg (branch below inferior mesenteric artery
Branches from common iliac artery to each leg- supplies leg
Supplies upper leg (thigh) from external iliac artery
Supplies the lungs (different form other arteries because it carries deoxy blood)
Supplies stomach
Supplies liver
Brachial vein
Radial vein
Brachiocephalic vein
Jugular vein
Subclavian vein
Common iliac vein
external iliac vein
femoral vein
Drains upper arm
Drains lower arm (thumb side)
Drains head, neck, upper extremities (the jugular vein and subclavian vein merge into it which merges into SVC)
Drains the head and neck
Drains upper extremities (shoulders, upper arm)
Drains from lower extremities into the distal end of IVC (the external iliac vein connects to it moving up)
Drains form lower extremities (femoral veins connect moving up)
Drain upper legs/thighs
Hepatic vein
Hepatic portal vein
IVC
Pulmonary vein
Renal vein
SVC
Splenic vein
Gonadal vein
Gastric vein
Drains the liver (after blood is cleaned)
Drains digestive organs; stomach, small/large intestines, spleen, gallbladder and pancreas to liver which “cleans” blood →towards heart
Drains lower extremities/ lower body(below diaphragm)
Drain oxygenated blood from lungs to take to the heart (different from other veins and colored red/acts as supply)
Drains kidneys
Drains upper extremities+head
Drains spleen
Drains gonads (ovaries+testes)
Drains the stomach
