r different forms related to eachother? how are they arranged?
different forms r related to each other, & arranged in hierarchy
give the forms hierarchy:
form of the good
highlighter forms (e.g. justice, wisdom, courage, beauty, etc.)
lower foods (e.g. blueness, softness)
what r the attributes of TFOTG?
most important
illuminates all of other forms & gives them value
purest most abstract forms
furtherst away from physical world
what r the attributes of the higher forms?
e.g. justice beauty
aspects of goodness - relies on TFOTG for its intelligibility (make sense) - to have meaning. TFOTF = sun, HF = sun rays. without sun, rays wouldnt exist and we wouldnt be able to see them
noble qualities
not as important as TFOTG
what r the attributes of the lower forms?
more particular and specific
more closely related to material objects
e.g. forms of blueness, forms of softness
what did p beleive true knowledge was?
true knowledge = knowledge of goodness
in P eyes. who/what is a philosoper?
‘philos’ loves ‘sophia’ wisdom = philosopher
and recognises true nature of goodness
who is the real philosopher? and what will they want to do? and due to this reason, what does plato believe
- one who genuinely loves wisdom
- will want to put their wisdom into practice by teaching others and setting an example
love involves action, not passivity
- and this, for p, is why countries should be ruled by philosopher kings
if we know what is good & what is bad, what will we choose? what causes immorality?
- knowing what is good & what is bad , we will choose good
only ignorance causes immorality e.g. lie because ignorant of form of honesty
when are moral decisions made?
moral decisions r made when becoming increasingly philosophical & looking for form of the good (act in alignment w TFOTG)
