Focused Group Discussion

an interactive discussion between 6-8 pre-selected

participants

• led by a trained moderator

• focusing on a specific set of issues.

When to do FGD

1) explore a topic or issue and be informed about wide ranging views, opinions

2) collect data that is better to be collected in a group e.g. group experiences or opinions or perceptions

3) not have huge amount of time/resources and generalizability and representativeness not a priority

Thematic content analysis

a method used to identify, analyse, and report patterns (themes)

within qualitative data.

Inductive Analysis

themes emerge from the data without preconceived categories.

Deductive Analysis

•Definition: themes are identified based on existing theories or frameworks.
