Mixture
Two or more substances mixed together but not chemically joined.
Homogeneous mixture
A type of mixture where the components are uniformly distributed, such as salt dissolved in water.
Heterogeneous mixture
A type of mixture where the components are not uniform, such as a salad or oil and water.
Decanting
The process of pouring off a liquid carefully from a solid.
Filtering
A method used for separating solids from liquids, such as separating sand from water.
Solid
A state of matter that has a fixed shape.
Gas
A state of matter that can spread out to fill any container and can be compressed easily.
Atoms
Tiny particles that make up matter.
Molecule
Two or more atoms joined together.
Compound
Two or more different atoms chemically joined.
Physical change
A change in which no new substance is formed, such as melting ice.
Chemical change
A change that results in the formation of a new substance, such as baking a cake or rusting iron.
Liquids
A state of matter that takes the shape of its container.
Water (H2O)
A substance that is classified as both a molecule and a compound.
Evaporation
The process used to separate a dissolved substance, like salt, from water.
