Distance Vector
Dynamic routing protocol that selects a path based on the next hop router with the lowest hop count
Link State
Dynamic routing protocol that build a complete network topology to select optimum forwarding paths
Routing Information Protocol (RIP)
Internal distance vector routing protocol that only considers the lowest hop count. Legacy protocol with limit of 15 hops.
Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP)
Used in cisco only environments. Internal hybrid distance vector routing protocol that applies a cost based on bandwidth and delay and maintains a topology table.
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First)
Internal link-state routing protocol that builds a hierarchal topology. Most common in mixed vendor environments.
Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
external distance vector routing protocol used on the internet by ISPs tp connecting ASes, or by a firm to forward traffic between ISPs.
What Protocol does BGP operate over?
TCP
