Chapter 1
The dovecote is set on fire
It becomes clear that Brooker Higgs and the Derby Twins are responsible
Thirsk burns his hand, the villagers prepare to blame the Beldams
Chapter 2
The villagers physically threaten the Beldams
Mistress Beldam is introduced
The men are put in the pillory and they all have their heads shaved
Chapter 3
The villagers feel shame in the injustice
Kent makes a speech but leaves out key bits for the harvest
Thirsk makes the mistake of not helping the man in the pillory
Chapter 4
Flashback to when Thirsk first arrives in the village
Opportunity for reconciliation with the Beldams
Lizzie Carr is chosen as the Gleaning Queen
Chapter 5
The older Beldam dies in the pillory
Jordan arrives in the village
Chapter 6
Jordan talks of his plans for the village and profit
Makes it clear that some of the villagers will leave
Chapter 7
Willowjack has been killed violently
Jordan threatens the villagers
Thirsk shows his willingness to be useful to Jordan
Chapter 8
Thirsk talks about how to make vellum
He describes Quill’s maps as beautiful but not able to capture the work needed on the land
Chapter 9
Anne Rogers, Kitty Gosse and Lizzie Carr have been ‘arrested’
The villagers begin to turn against Thirsk
They want to protest against the women being taken but cannot
Chapter 10
Learn that the protest has been unsuccessful
John Carr wants to speak with Thirsk inside because he is suspicious
Flashback to Jordan’s plans and Kent’s lack of intervention
Chapter 11
There is a meeting with the villagers that Thirsk is not invited to
The villagers attack the groom
All of the villagers leave
Chapter 12
Jordan shows a strange politeness to Thirsk
Thirsk agrees to help him with his plan
There is a sense that Kent will never come back
Chapter 13
Thirsk feeds the horses so they will get sick
The cohort leave, with the women still imprisoned
Lizzie Carr has lost her innocence
Chapter 14
There are now only 4 people in the village
Thirsk begins to think of himself as the ‘master’
He releases Mr Beldam from the pillory and they plough the land
Chapter 15
Thirsk has taken mushrooms and now thinks he has witnesses
He shows classism towards the Beldams being in the manor house
He frees the animals left
Chapter 16
Thirsk returns to the manor house to find it pillaged
Mistress Beldam starts burning down the village
Thirsk discovers Quill’s body in the trunk
Chapter 17
Thirsk reaches the village bounds
He burns Quill’s work, leaving a blank slate
Thirsk leaves the village
