Mycology
The study of fungi.
Mycosis
A fungal infection.
Systemic Mycosis
A fungal infection that is deep within the body.
Subcutaneous Mycosis
A fungal infection that occurs just under the skin.
Cutaneous Mycosis
A fungal infection affecting skin, hair, or nails.
Superficial Mycosis
A fungal infection that occurs on the very top surface of the skin.
Opportunistic Infection
An infection caused by pathogens that take advantage of an opportunity not normally available.
Chemoheterotrophs
Organisms that acquire their nutrients by absorbing organic compounds.
Hyphae
The long filaments that make up molds.
Septate Hyphae
Hyphae that have cell walls dividing individual cells.
Non-septate Hyphae
Hyphae without cell walls dividing the cells.
Vegetative Hyphae
Hyphae responsible for acquiring nutrients.
Aerial Hyphae
Hyphae involved in reproduction.
Mycelium
A visible mass of hyphae.
Dimorphic Fungi
Fungi that can grow in two forms based on temperature.
Protozoans
Single-celled organisms in Kingdom Protista, similar to animals.
Parasitology
The study of parasites.
Ectoparasite
A parasite that lives on the outside of the host.
Endoparasite
A parasite that lives inside the host.
Malaria
A disease caused by Plasmodium, transmitted by mosquitoes.
Sporozoan
Protozoans that are spore-forming.
Helminths
Parasitic worms, including flatworms and roundworms.
Flukes
Flatworms that can cause infections in humans.
Tapeworms
Flatworms that attach to the intestines and absorb nutrients.
