Natural Family planning
Also known as fertility awareness; includes types such as Basal body temp, Cervical mucus (Billings Method), Spinnbarkeit, and Calendar or rhythm method.
Spinnbarkeit
Stretching Characteristics of the mucous.
Calendar or rhythm method
A method based on the fact that ovulation occurs around 14 days before the next menstural period.
Marquette method
Incorporates use of an electronic hormonal fertility monitor that tracks changes of levels of Urinary metabolites of estrogen & LH.
ACHES
Warning signs to Report when taking Oral Contraceptives: Abdominal pain (severe), Chest pain (dyspnea, bloody sputum), HA (severe, weakness, numbness), Eye problems (blurring, double vision, vision loss), and Severe leg pain or swelling (speech disturbances).
Female Sterilization
Includes tubal ligation and hysteroscopic Sterilization; requires use of BC for 3 months until tubal fibrosis occurs.
Menopause
No menstural periods for a 12 month period because of changes in estrogen production.
Climacteric
Change of life AKA perimenopausal period, occurring 2−8 years before mensturation ceases.
Dyspareunia
Painful intercourse.
Moro (Startle)
A normal neurological reflex response in full term infants.
Rooting
A reflex that mothers are taught to use when breastfeeding.
Tonic neck
A stepping/dancing reflex found in full term infants.
Caput succedaneum
Swelling of soft tissues of the scalp caused by the delivery process; it crosses the suture line.
Cephalhematoma
A collection of blood beneath the periosteum of the cranial bone; it does not cross the suture line.
Fontanels
Soft spots that protect the head during delivery and allow for further brain growth.
Glomerular flow
The rate of this flow is decreased in newborns, limiting the kidneys' ability to concentrate urine and maintain fluid balance.
