Psychological Disorder
Any pattern of behavior, thinking, or emotional function that causes significant distress, poses danger, impairs functioning, or combines these factors.
Trephining
The ancient practice of cutting holes into the skull of a living person to relieve pressure or expel demons, still used today.
Hippocrates
Greek physician who proposed that illnesses are the result of imbalances in body fluids, challenging the idea of spirit possession.
Insanity
A legal term used to argue that individuals with severe psychological disorders cannot be held responsible for their actions.
Deviance
Behavior or thinking that deviates from the statistical or social norm, not always viewed negatively.
Subjective Discomfort
Emotional distress experienced while engaging in certain behaviors or thought processes, common in psychological disorders.
Maladaptive
Behavior that hinders a person’s ability to adapt to daily living demands, often causing harm or dysfunction.
Biological Model
Proposes that psychological disorders are caused by biological or medical factors.
Psychodynamic View
Suggests that disordered thinking is due to repressed threatening thoughts and memories.
Cognitive Perspective
Focuses on how thinking patterns affect mental health, especially maladaptive thoughts.
Cultural Syndrome
Specific symptoms of distress recognized in certain cultures, which may not be classified as an illness elsewhere.
Biopsychosocial Perspective
A model that considers biological, psychological, and social factors in understanding mental health.
DSM-5-TR
A manual that provides criteria and descriptions for diagnosing about 300 mental disorders.
Comorbidity
The presence of more than one mental disorder simultaneously, which can increase risk for other disorders.
Anxiety Disorders
Disorders characterized by excessive anxiety, worry, or fear that can take specific or generalized forms.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
A disorder with repetitive, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) leading to repetitive behaviors or mental acts.
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
A disorder in which a person experiences two or more distinct personalities, often linked to trauma.
Anorexia Nervosa
An eating disorder involving extreme restriction of food intake and significant weight loss.
Mood Disorder
A category of psychological disorders that involves disturbances in emotion, ranging from depression to mania.
Bipolar Disorder
A mood disorder characterized by extreme mood swings from severe depression to manic episodes.
