Chromatography

Solute
A soluble substance that dissolves into a liquid.
Solvent
The substance the solute dissolves into.
Solution
A liquid mixture in which the solute is dissolved into the solvent.
Soluble
A substance that has the ability to dissolve in liquid.
Chromatogram
The pattern formed on the chromatography paper by the separated components.
Separation Principle
Substances travel over the paper at different speeds because of their different solubilities in the solvent and attraction to the paper.
Rf (Retention Factor)
The ratio of the distance the spot moved above the origin to the distance of the solvent front.
Rf Formula
Distance travelled by the solute divided by the distance travelled by the solvent front.
Origin Line
A baseline drawn in pencil approximately 1cm from the bottom of the chromatography paper where samples are placed.
