Myasthenia gravis
An autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness/fatigue, dysphagia, slurred speech, and droopy eyelids; it presents an aspiration risk and involves gradual muscle use weakness.
Parkinson disease
A condition where the nurse should encourage activity for the patient.
Passive ROM
Range of motion exercises only done when the patient cannot move independently.
Isometric movement
Exercises with no visible movement used on patients on bed rest, including those in a cast or traction, to maintain strength without moving the joint.
Examples of Isometric movement
Tightening the thigh while keeping the leg still, squeezing the buttocks together while holding, or pressing palms together without moving.
Droplet precaution
Precaution category used for Pertussis (whooping cough), Flu, and Meningococcal meningitis.
Pulmonary Embolism intervention sequence
Assess oxygen, place client on cardiac monitor, provide oxygen, obtain labs, and give Heparin.
Overflow Incontinence
Occurs when the bladder cannot properly empty and becomes overfilled, resulting in the leakage of small amounts of urine.
Urge Incontinence
Condition involving an intense urge to pee and the involuntary loss of urine (the feeling of having to go "now").
Functional Incontinence
A situation where the bladder works properly but cognitive or physical limits prevent the patient from making it to the bathroom in time.
Simvastatin
A medication taken in the evening that is contraindicated in pregnancy because it can cause fetal damage.
