What is diffusion
net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration down a concentration gradient
which states can diffusion happen
gases and liquids because particles are free to move randomly
what are 3 ways you can increase the rate of diffusion
increasing the temperature
increasing the surface area
increasing the concentration gradient
name 3 examples where diffusion can take place
oxygen getting taken into cells
carbon dioxide is removed from cells
what is osmosis
the movement of water molecules from and area of highwater concentration to an area of low water concentration across a partially permable membrane
give an example of osmosis
root hair cell takes in water from soil as there is a high concentration gradient outside in the soil , causing the water particles to pass into the cell where there is a lower concentration gradient
what is active transport
net movement of particles from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration using energy from respiration (energy)
examples of active transport
in a human gut there is low concentration of nutrients compared to the blood, active transport allows nutrients to be absorbed into the blood stream
