Apex
The tip of the root
Pulp Cavity
Cavity that is filled with pulpal tissues and is located at the central portion of the tooth. It is also surrounded by dentin
Anatomic root
embedded in the bone of the upper and lower jaws and is covered by cementum
Apical Foramen
small opening that the blood supply (arteries and veins) lymphatic drainage system and the nerve supply enter the tooth into the dental pulp
Anatomic crown
The portion of the tooth that is covered by enamel and visible in the oral cavity
Cusp
A peak of elevation of a tooth located on the occlusal surface of molars and premolars and on the incisal edges of canines
Lobe
A primary developmental center of in the formation of the crown of the tooth
Fissure
A fault that occurs along the developmental groove during the incomplete or imperfect union of two lobes
Pit
a pinpoint depression located at the junction of developmental grooves or fissures. Often the site of dental caries.
Mamelon
a lobe found on the incisal edge of anterior teeth. Usually three in number
groove
a linear depression on the surface of the tooth
ridge
a linear elevation on the surface of a tooth.
Marginal ridges
elevated borders of enamel which form the margins of molars and premolars mesially and distally as well as the lingual surfaces of anterior teeth
fossa
a rounded or irregular depression found on the surface of a tooth
Enamel
hardest tissue of the human body; covers entire crown of teeth. Calcium & phosphorus
Dentin
light yellow substance, makes up largest portion of tooth. Harder than bone, softer than enamel. Located beneath the enamel.
Dentin
70% inorganic matter calcium & phosphorus
cementum
bone like tissue that covers the roots of the tooth made of collagen
periodontal ligament
fibrous tissue that separates the tooth from the bone socket and anchors the tooth to the bone. made of collagen
Cusp of carabelli
a fifth cusp found on the lingual surface of some maxillary first molars
tubercle
small elevation that is produced by an extra formation of enamel
