-ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code. Terminates at the first weld, flange, or threaded joint off the boiler.

American National Standards Institute

  • Founded 1918

  • Ensures US standards are applied to international standards.

  • Minimum design requirements are accepted as a standard for all piping outside jurisdiction of other codes.

  • Piping trades commonly use these:

    • B31.1 Power Piping

    • B31.2 Fuel Gas Piping

    • B31.3 Process Piping - Chemical Plant and Petroleum Piping

    • B31.4 Liquid Petroleum and Transportation Piping

ASTM - What does it stand for and what do they cover?

American Society for Testing and Materials

  • Founded 1898

  • Standards for characteristics and performance of materials, products, suppliers, and services.

  • 66 volumes divided in 16 sections.

  • All accepted piping must be tested with ASTM spec number and grade.

    • ASME accepted pressure retaining materials identified with “S” preceding the “A” which is by ASTM.

      • Ex: A-36 is ASTM, SA-36 is ASME endorsed.

  • standard of qualifications and exams for inspectors who enforce the code in Alberta

  • One uniform code and stamp on all registered pressure vessels

    • set of numbers - owner of facility

    • letters - inspection district

    • second set of numbers - specific plant of facility

    • letter - type of plant

Canadian Standards Association

  • Founded 1919

  • Products/materials, building systems for designers, builders, mfg, suppliers, distributors.

  • Applications, Design, Energy section, mechanical/industrial section

  • CRN - Boilers and pressure vessels installed in Canada require a CRN

  • When first registered, CRN is issued in the province where it was first registered with a decimal point to represent the province. Ex: if the desitgn is 823, it would be 832.2 if Nova Scotia.
