ASME - What does it stand for and what do they cover?
American Society of Mechanical Engineers
-Nonprofit for engineering disciplines including pipe trades
Founded 1880
-2 most common sections:
-ASME B31 (aka piping code)
-ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code. Terminates at the first weld, flange, or threaded joint off the boiler.
ANSI - What does it stand for and what do they cover?
American National Standards Institute
Founded 1918
Ensures US standards are applied to international standards.
Minimum design requirements are accepted as a standard for all piping outside jurisdiction of other codes.
Piping trades commonly use these:
B31.1 Power Piping
B31.2 Fuel Gas Piping
B31.3 Process Piping - Chemical Plant and Petroleum Piping
B31.4 Liquid Petroleum and Transportation Piping
B31.5 Refrigeration Piping
B31.8 Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping
B31.9 Building Service Piping
B31.11 Slurry Piping
ASTM - What does it stand for and what do they cover?
American Society for Testing and Materials
Founded 1898
Standards for characteristics and performance of materials, products, suppliers, and services.
66 volumes divided in 16 sections.
All accepted piping must be tested with ASTM spec number and grade.
ASME accepted pressure retaining materials identified with “S” preceding the “A” which is by ASTM.
Ex: A-36 is ASTM, SA-36 is ASME endorsed.
ABSA - What does it stand for and what do they cover?
Alberta Boilers Safety Association
accepts the national board of boilers and pressure vessel inspectors
standard of qualifications and exams for inspectors who enforce the code in Alberta
One uniform code and stamp on all registered pressure vessels
Pressure piping registration system:
PP - pressure piping
set of numbers - owner of facility
letters - inspection district
second set of numbers - specific plant of facility
letter - type of plant
CSA - What does it stand for and what do they cover?
Canadian Standards Association
Founded 1919
Products/materials, building systems for designers, builders, mfg, suppliers, distributors.
Applications, Design, Energy section, mechanical/industrial section
CRN - Boilers and pressure vessels installed in Canada require a CRN
When first registered, CRN is issued in the province where it was first registered with a decimal point to represent the province. Ex: if the desitgn is 823, it would be 832.2 if Nova Scotia.
NRC - What does it stand for and what do they cover?
National Research Council Canada
brings canadian products, tech, innovations to market.
