Human Respiratory System
The organ system responsible for the intake of oxygen and the expulsion of carbon dioxide.
Oxygen
A colorless, odorless gas essential for life, utilized by the body for cellular respiration.
Carbon Dioxide
A colorless gas produced by cells during metabolic processes and expelled through respiration.
Cellular Respiration
The process by which cells convert glucose and oxygen into energy, producing carbon dioxide and water as byproducts.
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs in the lungs where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs.
Bronchioles
The smaller branches of the bronchi that lead to the alveoli.
Diaphragm
A muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity and plays a key role in breathing.
Ventilation
The process of moving air in and out of the lungs.
Gas Exchange
The process by which oxygen is delivered to the blood and carbon dioxide is removed, occurring in the alveoli.
