Social Institutions
Patterned behaviors that provide a guide for accomplishing something in society.
Companionate Marriage
Emergence of modern marriage based on love and compatibility.
Marriage Gradient
A pattern in which women tend to marry up while men marry down in mate selection.
Endogamy
The tendency to marry only others within the same social group.
Diaspora
The worldwide scattering of a nationality or ethnic group.
Transnational Marriage
Marriages in which couples reside in different countries.
Remittances
Money and income immigrants send back to their families in their country of origin.
Yokemate
Term used by European serfs to refer to each other due to shared workload.
Androcentrism
The idea that men and masculinity are better than women and femininity.
Doctrine of Separate Spheres
Ideology that a man’s duty is to be a breadwinner and a woman’s duty is to be a good wife and mother.
Public Sphere
The world of market relations and productive behavior, labeled as distinctly masculine.
Private Sphere
Primarily the home and family life; this became defined as the place where women belonged.
Domestic Feminism
Belief that women's moral superiority suited them for educating and disciplining children.
Good Provider Role
A man's primary obligation is to work to meet his family’s material needs.
Big Wheel
Element of masculinity measured by power, success, wealth, and status.

A changing, unsettled recombination of different family forms.
