Nonfiction writing meant to explain, inform, or teach about a topic.
What are organizational structures in informational texts?
The ways authors arrange information to make ideas clear.
Why is identifying text organization useful?
It helps readers understand how information is connected and find important ideas.
What are the main types of informational text structures?
Description, sequence/chronology, compare/contrast, and cause/effect.
What is the description organizational structure?
A structure that explains a topic by giving details about its features, traits, or characteristics.
What question does a description structure often answer?
"What is it like?"
What signal words are common in description structure?
For example, such as, characteristics, features, and details.
What is the sequence/chronology organizational structure?
A structure that explains events or steps in the order they happen.
What question does sequence structure often answer?
"When did it happen?" or "What happens next?"
What signal words show sequence/chronology?
Before, first, second, third, next, then, later, finally.
What is the compare/contrast organizational structure?
A structure that explains similarities and differences between two or more things.
What signal words show compare/contrast?
Similar, different, both, unlike, however, although, compared to.
What is the cause/effect organizational structure?
A structure that explains why something happens and what happens as a result.
What question does cause/effect answer?
"Why did this happen?" or "What was the result?"
What signal words show cause/effect?
Because, since, due to, for this reason, therefore, thus, consequently, as a result.
How can a title help identify organizational structure?
A title may reveal what the passage focuses on, such as a comparison.
Can one informational text contain more than one organizational structure?
Yes. Different sections or paragraphs can use different structures depending on the information being presented.
How do you identify the structure of a reading passage?
Look for signal words, the way ideas are arranged, and the relationship between ideas.
What structure would an article describing the sights and sounds of an animal migration use?
Description structure.
