Jurisdiction
The authority of a court to deal with a person, issue, incident, or event.
Original Jurisdiction
The power of a court to have trials.
Appellate Jurisdiction
The power of a court to review a lower court's procedures and decisions.
Peace Officer
All sworn law enforcement officials in Kentucky.
Part 1 Crimes
Includes homicide, forcible rape/sodomy, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft.
Local Autonomy
The principle that law enforcement is controlled by local officials, such as the Mayor and Chief of Police.
FBI
The main investigative arm of the U.S. Government with jurisdiction over all violations of criminal law.
Interlocal Cooperation Act
Allows public agencies to enter formal agreements to provide services and facilities for each other.
District Court
The lowest level of court in Kentucky, holding trials on criminal and civil issues.
Circuit Court
The court that has original jurisdiction and hears appeals from District Courts.
Grand Jury
A group of citizens who decide if there is sufficient evidence to indict a suspect.
Indictment
A written document issued by a grand jury charging someone with a criminal offense.
Probable Cause
The level of evidence required to make an arrest or charge someone with a crime.
Citation
A written order issued by a peace officer directing a person to appear in court.
Bail
Property deposited or promised to the court to secure the release of an arrested person.
Post-Arrest Complaint
A document completed when an arrest is made without a warrant.
