Protagonist
The main character in a story.
Antagonist
The character, force, or problem that works against the protagonist.
Character Trait
A word that describes a character's personality.
Direct Characterization
When the author directly tells readers what a character is like.
Indirect Characterization
When readers learn about a character through their actions, words, thoughts, feelings, and interactions.
Theme
The lesson or message the author wants readers to learn.
Central Idea
The main point of a passage or text.
Plot
The sequence of events in a story.
Conflict
The main problem in a story.
Internal Conflict
A struggle happening inside a character.
External Conflict
A struggle between a character and an outside force.
Main Idea
What a paragraph or passage is mostly about.
Supporting Details
Information that helps explain the main idea.
Inference
A conclusion you make using clues from the text and your own thinking.
Context Clues
Words and phrases around an unfamiliar word that help determine its meaning.
Text Evidence
Information from the text used to support an answer.
Author's Purpose
The reason an author wrote a text.
Introduction (Literary Essay)
The part of an essay where you introduce the title and author, state your claim, and briefly explain what the essay will discuss.
Body Paragraph
A section of an essay that states a reason, includes text evidence, and explains how the evidence supports the claim.
Conclusion (Literary Essay)
The final part of an essay that restates the claim, summarizes the reasons, and ends with a final thought.
