SOG 400-04 Purpose
To provide a framework for safe and effective fire attack operations involving motorized vehicles.
SOG 400-04 Authority
Fire Rescue Administrator.
Positioning Priority (Low Hanging Smoke)
When smoke is low hanging and moving upstream of traffic, blocking for a Safe Work Area takes priority.
Safe Work Area
An area blocked from traffic and other hazards by positioning units according to SOG 310-01 Traffic Operations.
Vehicle Fire Approach Direction
Fire Rescue personnel shall not approach from the front or rear; they should approach from a 45-degree angle from the sides.
Compressed Cylinders Hazards
Found in vehicle hoods, airbags, and hatchbacks; these have injured firefighters and damaged apparatus.
Fire Attack Hose Line Minimums
At a minimum, a 143" pre-connected hose line flowing a minimum of 100 GPM.
Battery Cable Procedure
Cables shall be disconnected or cut from the battery, encompassing both positive and negative.
Vehicle Search Scope
The entire vehicle, including the trunk, shall be searched for possible victims.
First Arriving Unit (Command)
Shall establish Incident Command and manage the incident until it is transferred or terminated.
Incident Safety Officer
A role that the Incident Commander must assign during the management of a vehicle fire incident.
Two-in/Two-out Rule (Application)
Referenced specifically for any entry into 18 wheel trailers during vehicle fire operations.
Firefighter PPE Requirements
All personnel involved in firefighting operations shall wear full personal protective equipment and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
