What factors must be in place for a substance to conduct electricity?

1. The ions must be charged.

2. The ions must be free to move.

What is ionic bonding

1. The bonding between a metal and a non-metal.

2. Electrons are transferred, creating separate ions.

3. The electrostatic attraction between the positive and negative ions.

What are the properties of compounds of this bonding?

1. High MP and BP

2. Soluble in water.

3. Can conduct electricity in liquid or solution, but not in solid form because the ions are held in a fixed lattice by the strong electrostatic forces of attraction, inhibiting movement

What are electrostatic forces? And why do ionic compounds have a high melting point and boiling point and why can they not conduct electricity in a solid state, but can in a liquid state?

1. Electrostatic forces are the forces that hold the ions together

2. Ionic compounds contain very strong electrostatic forces; therefore, a large amount of (heat) energy is required to break these strong electrostatic forces.

3. In solids, the strong electrostatic forces hold the charged ions in a fixed lattice structure, inhibiting their movement, while in a liquid, charged ions are present, which are free to move.
